Regolamento
The UEFA Super Cup is the shortest competition on the continental calendar: one match, between two clubs, on an August afternoon or evening.
Who plays it
It brings together the winners of the two leading club competitions of the season just finished: the Champions League and the Europa League.
No league position or seasonal merit comes into it. The right to take part flows from a trophy lifted months earlier, and no other result awards it.
What has changed over time
For much of its history the match paired the European Cup winner with the Cup Winners’ Cup winner. When the latter competition was discontinued, the place passed to the UEFA Cup winner, later the Europa League winner.
The format has changed too: for long stretches it was played over two legs, one match at each ground. The single match at a neutral venue is a more recent arrangement.
The current format
| Element | How it works |
|---|---|
| Number of matches | One only |
| Venue | Neutral, chosen years in advance |
| If level | Extra time and then penalties |
| The loser | No sporting consequence |
The neutral venue follows a clear logic. Neither finalist should enjoy home support, and UEFA uses the occasion to bring a high-profile match to countries that rarely host one.
Why it is played in August
The date is not incidental. The match opens the European season, before the other cups get going with the qualifying rounds described on the Champions League page.
That creates a problem which repeats every year. The two clubs arrive with pre-season barely under way, and often with incomplete squads: the transfer window has not yet closed.
Where the Super Cup sits in the season
- May The two European finals are played. From that moment the Super Cup participants are known.
- June and July The two clubs finish their season, break, and begin pre-season again.
- August The match, when many domestic leagues have not yet played a round.
- Late August The summer window closes: whoever played the Super Cup did so with a squad not yet settled.
- September The league phase of the three cups begins, and the Super Cup is already history.
The rules on the pitch
UEFA’s rules from the other competitions apply. Away goals carry no weight, since there is only one match, and player lists follow the European criteria described on the three cup pages.
The number of substitutions allowed is the one set by the competition regulations, with the stoppage windows laid down in the laws of the game in force.
Compared with national super cups
Almost every country has its own super cup, pairing the league champion with the cup winner. The Italian case is described on the Coppa Italia page.
The difference lies in who takes part. National super cups pit the league winner against the cup winner; the European one brings together two winners of international competitions.
Posizioni e qualificazioni
| Outcome | Consequence | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Winning | Trophy and prize money | No additional European place |
| Winning | Points for the club coefficient | They affect seeding in future draws |
| Losing | Participation payment | Lower than the winner’s |
| Losing | No repercussions | It touches neither league nor cups |
What it does not award
The Super Cup gives access to no competition. That is the main difference from domestic cups and from the three UEFA competitions, where every trophy opens a door.
The winner has already secured European qualification through the tournament that brought it here, following the chain described in the guide to European qualification.
The effect on the coefficient
The match produces points for the individual club coefficient, the one setting a club’s pot in the draw. It does not feed the country coefficient the way the rounds of the three cups do, as explained in the guide to the UEFA ranking.
Why it is judged in opposite ways
To some supporters it is a minor trophy, decided in one match by teams not yet in condition. To a club that has never won one, it is a European title that goes into the honours list and stays there.
Both readings hold. It is worth recalling that in club honours lists, such as those on the Juventus and Milan pages, the Super Cup sits alongside the other continental trophies.
Premi
The prize fund is the smallest among UEFA club competitions, because it is a single match. The value of the evening lies elsewhere.
How the payment works
| Item | Who receives it | Criterion |
|---|---|---|
| Participation payment | Both clubs | A fixed sum, equal for the two finalists |
| Winner’s payment | Whoever lifts the trophy | Added to the participation payment |
| Gate receipts | UEFA, not the clubs | The venue is neutral and staging is centralised |
The third row is the one most often missed. Neither club is at home, so neither collects the ticket money: a substantial difference from the cup matches described on the Europa League page.
The value that is not money
The match falls when no other top-level football is scheduled. That brings television attention out of proportion to its sporting weight, and a commercial platform clubs use to present new kits and new sponsorship deals.
What it means for the host city
Awarding the match to a country that rarely stages fixtures of this level is a declared UEFA policy. For the local federation it is a chance at visibility, and for the ground a rehearsal ahead of larger events.
It is also why the venue is announced years ahead: adapting a stadium to the required standards takes time and building work.
Calciomercato
The Super Cup has no transfer rules of its own, but it falls at the worst possible moment in the transfer calendar.
A match played with the window open
In August the summer session is not yet closed. The two clubs take the field with squads still being assembled: some players have only just arrived, others have already agreed a move but not yet left.
The exact dates are in the guide to transfer windows, and they differ by country: one club may still be able to register players while the other cannot.
The eligibility bar
The general UEFA rule applies: a player who has already appeared in a European competition that season cannot play another for a different club. For the Super Cup the issue rarely arises, since the European season has only just begun.
The UEFA list criteria still apply, with places reserved for club-trained and association-trained players, as described in the guide to types of transfer.
Contract bonuses
Winning appears among the bonuses in some contracts, at modest sums compared with those tied to qualification or to rounds won in the larger cups. How they work is explained in the guide to clauses and contracts.
An indirect effect
For a newly signed player, the Super Cup is often the competitive debut in the new shirt. It is a showcase that shapes how the signing is perceived, even if it changes none of its financial terms.
Who misses out
A player central to the May final may not be on the pitch in August, having been sold in the meantime. That follows from the gap between winning the right to play the Super Cup and actually playing it.
The reverse happens just as often: someone who takes the field may not have played a minute of the run that got the club there. No rule prevents it, because the right to take part belongs to the club and not to individuals.
